Positive fit test

My husband had a positive fit test results back the doctor in the hospital rung him and said it come back as 43% does that mean he has cancer in the bowels or colon please his is so worried he keeps crying

  • Hi Sandy,

All the test means is that they have found blood within the stool. Thankfully many things which are not cancer related can cause this! My own husband was sent for a urgent colonoscopy after passing blood and they found polyps and colitis which has been biopsied to test for an IBD. He was perfectly healthy up until the sudden blood loose and I had convinced myself it was bowel cancer and so can understand the stress this situation can induce. Non-cancerous polyps, fissures, fistures, hymoroids, ulcerative colitis, crohns...just a few of the things which can cause a positive fit test and all more likely then cancer.

Wishing you the best with the upcoming investigates.

  • Hello, and thank you for posting.

I'm sorry your husband is so upset and distressed, but be reassured that a FIT test is not a cancer diagnosing test. A positive FIT test means that blood has been found in his poo, but this can mean many things, not just bowel cancer. Blood in poo can be there for instance if there are polyps, haemorrhoids (piles), irritable bowel syndrome, crohns, so not just cancers.

The doctors will decide what he needs to have done next to find out the reason for the blood, and may well offer him a colonoscopy.

If either of you want to talk this through do chat with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number is Freephone 0808 800 4040, and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

Take care both of you, and hopefully you will get more information soon.

    Sarah.
