Skin “lesion” appeared then disappeared over 14 days.

Hi folks.

Awaiting biopsy results - again - for a dark, irregularly shaped lesion that appeared then rapidly disappeared over 14 days.

I survived Grade 4 1.78 Breslow Malignant Melanoma back in 1997 thanks to the NHS.  It was particularly aggressive & invasive. Never thought that I'd be back to waiting for a biopsy result again.

GP said that I'm lucky to be still here post 1997.

Just hope that this latest biopsy is not a follow on from 1997.  With that in mind, please could I ask is it possible that the original excision only delayed the melanoma?  Might this latest lesion have disappeared due to being a regressive melanoma?

Worried sick going through this again - like all of us here I guess.

NB I was only told Grade 4 back in '97 but I inderstand that there are 2 quantifications to observe: Stage and Level.

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about your biopsy to see if you have cancer especially as in the past you have already had a melanoma.

It is possible for a melanoma to regress (if this is what the biopsy shows).  It is thought that this is caused by a response from the immune system.  Your dermatologist can see if this happened by checking the area by looking at it and with a handheld device called a dermatoscope.

Knowing the size(the thickness of the tumour) and if it has spread to the lymph nodes or another organ is called staging. Knowing the stage will determine how best to treat it and what the prognosis (outlook) is.  There have been changes in this process since the 90's, although the Breslow System is still used.  You can read more the staging of a melanoma on our website here  and here

I am afraid we cannot say if this is reoccurrence of your melanoma (if this is a melanoma) , but this is something you could discuss with your dermatologist.

Waiting for test results can be difficult so I hope you have some support.

Please get back us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
