Ultrasound results

I recently went for a scan and my doctor text me to say I had a fibroid uterus and small cyst on one of my overies. They said it was nothing to worry about for now and to have another scan in 2 months time. I have had this scan but this time the sonogropher says I need to go to gynecology and that it could be nothing but it could be sinister.

She mentioned that I had more cysts and had a 'cystic lining' to my uterus. I am really concerned but my GP can't see me till April at the earliest. I have been told I can get a print out of my results once the doctor has seen them (possibley tomorrow).

I don't have any symptoms at the momemnt but I am 55 and starting to go through menopause. I was orginalyl reffered due to heavy bleeding that has since stopped.

How worried should I be?

  • Hello and thanks for your post

Abnormal bleeding can have several causes as there are other explanations aside from cancer and a lot of people who are referred to the hospital with this symptom turn out to have something else the matter.

Ovarian cysts and fibroids are very common. Sometimes they have to be monitored or removed especially if they have become bigger, and are causing problems.

I can appreciate that you want to get as much information as you can before you see the gynaecologist at the hospital, but hopefully your GP will be able to discuss your results with you. Unfortunately it is not possible to anticipate what they are going to tell you. Hopefully, nothing too serious is going on.

I know waiting to find out more is never easy but I’m afraid there is no real way round this. Some people find talking it through with family and friends and keeping busy can sometimes help. But until you know more it’s natural to worry.

I hope you know more about your situation soon. Give us a ring if you would like to talk things over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,
