18 month old with neck lump

My Grandson is 18 months old, he developed a lump, fairly big, like a small egg, just under his chin, the flat part above the neck, just above his Adams apple. A local Hospital did ultrasound, they said a cyst is usually black on the screen, this is grey. They said it could be an infection and want to see him in 6 weeks. He's fit and well and active, does sometimes vomit but not abnormally, so I think. No bloods or anything taken, 6 weeks seems along wait? He has had the lump for over two weeks, We are worried. Should more tests be completed. We have a very good children's Hospital nearby, should we ask to be referred there?

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your grandson's situation and the worry it must be causing you and the family.

It is reassuring to know that the ultrasound scan was done. If anything worrying showed up then I do think that the parents or you (if you are the carer) would have been told and a referral to a specialist paediatric team and for more tests such as a blood test would have been done. I think in a very young child invasive tests like a blood test are only done if they are absolutely necessary. This is because they can be very a stressful procedure for the child to have.

While it might seem that doing another scan in 6 weeks is a long time I don't think it is. This is because doing it earlier will not necessarily be enough time to see if there are any changes. Doctors usually leave a period of a few weeks or months to rescan to see if changes happen.

I do not know if he needs to be referred to the children's hospital that you mention but there is no harm in asking. I think the best thing to do now is discuss this and the results of the scan with the child's GP.

I hope this has been of some help and that your grandson will be okay.
