Confused by cervical screening

I feel silly worrying about this but it's just constantly at the back of my head.

In February 2020 I had my routine smear test, which then came back as HPV positive and showing I had abnormal cells.  I went for a colposcopy where they could see I had a small section of abnormal cells and took a sample.  This came back as cin 1 and I had another colposcopy during which the nurse said she couldn't see any further abnormal cells but took a smear test and said that should that show as normal I wouldn't have to be tested again for 3 year.

This all happened between Feb 2020 and September 2021 (some delays with COVID).  I then got my results back on December 2021 and it said I had further abnormal cells and needed another smear test at my local GP after 6 months.  I'm now just waiting for my appointment on the 22nd march, but I'm terrified that it's not normal to keep getting abnormal cells on tests.  Me and my partner also want to start trying for a baby (put it off for the past 2 years because of all of this) and I just don't seem to get any advice or support from my doctor's/nurses.

Has anyone else experienced this, am I safe to just start trying for a baby even if I might have abnormal cells.

  • Hi and thanks for posting

It's normal to be confused by smear results and abnormal cells - many people aren't always sure what this means.

The important thing is that abnormal cells are not cancer - even cin 3 changes which are classed as severe, are not cancer. If the cells were left for 10-15yrs they have the ability to change, but that is why the cervical screening programme is 3 yearly , with more frequent checks if there are moderate or severe changes .This is to prevent cancer.

It can take a while, sometimes a couple of years for the immune system to get rid of HPV and there's nothing really that you can do - it's known that smoking and if you're run down can all delay this process, but eventually you will find it's clear. There's more about HPV (which causes abnormal cells) here

There is no need to delay getting pregnant as many people will find they're pregnant just after their smear test showed some changes. You can read more about this here

Do give us a call if you'd like to go over any of this - many people do ring about these sort of issues - Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

Try and not worry about this - it is very common though I appreciate it can be frustrating waiting for HPV to clear.

    All the best
