Cervical Cancer

Hey, looking for some advice. My mum :neutral:had an ultrasound, and was sent an appointment to see a gynaecologist. My mum has been very coy, but after her appointment she admitted that they told her she had a 1 in 10 chance she had cervical cancer. She's had biopsies taken, but this was also apparently written in her appointment letter (1 in10 chance) I didn't think this would be written in a letter that potentially she had cancer. Are doctors allowed to write this? I'm now beside myself worrying )-:

  • Hi and thanks for the post

As we aren't involved in your mum's care it's difficult to know exactly what may be going on. It's more common certainly to wait for results from biopsies and tests before commenting on someone's situation, though sometimes doctors may say that although they need to wait for results, there may be a possibility for some cause for concern. Though it would be more unusual to put this in writing on an appointment letter.

Biopsy results will certainly give more information about what's going on for your mum. Cervical cancer is more commonly picked up after smears have shown some abnormal cells and biopsies are usually taken at the colposcopy clinic. However, if an ultrasound was requested this may be due to symptoms that your mum was having in between her smear tests.

I appreciate it must be very worrying but it's going to be a case of waiting to see what the results show.

Once you know a little more, please do give us a call if you would like to have a chat or if you have any queries on Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday

I hope things turn out well for your mum

    All the best

  • Thank you, she's almost 75 and she has never mentioned smear tests. What she has said, is that she has had irregular bleeding since August of last year that she hasn't had checked.

My mum eventually went to the doctor, and bloods got taken. It's escalated quickly from there, the bloods showed something and there was also something visible on the ultrasound which is when they have booked a gynaecologist appointment to have biopsies taken. At the bisopsies, they've also said they think there is a chance it's cancer.

She's always very secretive, and won't let me read the letter. She's of that stubborn generation where they don't go to doctors or share things

  • Hi Leah

I hope you don’t mind me jumping onto the post, but I’m wondering if there may be any misunderstanding of the letter on your mum’s part? The standard letter which comes with an urgent referral says “ more than 9 out of 10 people referred this way are not diagnosed with cancer”. It’s a standard printed letter that goes out to everyone, rather than a letter from the doctor. Is that maybe where she’s got th one in 10 chance from?

    Just a thought.

I hope your mum will be ok. I’ve been through cervical cancer twice now, so if I can offer any support from the point of view of a patient rather than a medical professional, please just ask.x
