Possible thyroid cancer??

Hi there

I've come on here seeking a bit of reassurance really. I'm 30 years old and about a month ago I developed what I thought was a spot on my neck. 4 weeks later and its still here right at the front of my neck by my thyroid gland. It feels like a small pea sized lump. It's firm and does move around

I have no other symptoms at all but have had an underactive thyriod since birth. Went to the doctor and he said it seems like it's a superficial thing under the skin but can't be sure. He's sending me to have an ultra sound on a 2 week referral. I'm terrified I've got thyriod cancer. Can anyone help??

  • Hello Lauzy and thanks for posting,

I can appreciate how it is unsettling to be referred urgently, but this lump could easily be nothing to worry about, so try not to keep an open mind for now.

If the lump is attached to the thyroid gland, and from what you say your GP isn't really sure if it is, it could just be a benign (non cancerous) thyroid nodule (small growth). But it is important to be sure. Thyroid nodules are quite common and most of the time they don't have anything to do with cancer, but because they do sometimes it is important to get this sorted out properly.

Urgent referrals often trigger a fair bit of alarm, but bear in the mind the majority of people referred this way don't turn out to have cancer at the end of the day.

I think all you can do for now is to work out how best to hold your nerve and manage the inevitable stress of waiting.

I hope you find out more soon.

    Takes care,

    Julia
