Request a mammogram.

Hi all,

For around 3 month I've had pain in my breast. This has become more consistent, my boob is also swollen and feels heavy. My nipple has also become inverted, although reacts to stimulation and cold.

The dr wants me to take antibiotics in case of an infection but I have no signs of an infection and like I say pain started 3months ago.

Am I over reacting to push for a mammogram?

Thanks

  • I would ask for a referral to the breast clinic for assessment and scans if required, GPs are usually happy to send you on. Especially if you go back with the same problem.

  • I agree with Susie.  Do ask your GP to refer you straight in to the breast clinic at your local hospital.  They will look after you and do mammograms and any other investigations needed.  You know what's right for you and always trust your instincts.  Try not to worry, once they have sorted you out you will know exactly what you're dealing with.  The not being sure and constantly worrying is a lot worse.  Most of the clinics are in catch-up due to Covid so if you want to be seen quickly press for an urgent referral otherwise you could wait a couple of months to be seen.  Take care.

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about your sore, painful breast.

Your breast symptoms could be caused by an infection. It is possible to get a breast infection even if you are not breast feeding. So please do reconsider taking the antibiotics your GP prescribed.

Pain is not a usual sign of breast cancer, current research has shown this. I think if you take your GP's advise and your breast does not get better then it is possible that you will be referred to a breast clinic. There you are likely to be offered tests and this will include a mammogram.

I hope your breast gets better, if it does not go back to your GP and then ask if you should be referred to the breast clinic.

I hope you will be okay. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.

    Take care,

    Caroline
