Cancer pain relief

My Dad has been diagnosed with metastatic melanoma. The met in his shoulder is causing him excruciating pain that he cannot get under control. He needs access to a palliative care service but there are none in his area - apparently the positions are vacant.

How can I get him access to a specialist- NHS or private to help him with this disabling pain?

Desperate - hate seeing him suffer

  • Hi and thanks for the post

I'm so sorry to hear about the pain your dad is in - it must be very hard seeing this not being properly addressed.

Although the palliative care post is vacant , there are usually other people on the team that should be able to help so do ask again. The specialist should also be able to prescribe appropriate pain relief and change or up his current medication. Some hospitals will have pain clinics, but as you don't mention where you are, do ask about this.

Hospices also have people who will advise on symptom control so depending on where you are, your dad can ask to be referred for help with his pain - you don't have to be admitted for this.

Some GPs are very good at managing pain relief so this may be another route, together with possible community symptom control teams.

If none of these apply ,or are helping,  the only other solution would be to try to ask for a second opinion at another hospital regarding pain control. More about second opinions  here  and here if you   would like to know more about the different treatments for pain and how to access them

It can't be easy seeing this and I hope you have someone you can talk to about what's going on with your dad-  you can try calling a Maggies centre    , any one in the country, if you would like to talk things through , please do give us a call to go over any of this or if you would just like a chat - Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday

I hope your dad gets this sorted out as soon as possible

    All the best

    Wanda
