can i have a pelvic exam under a general anaesthetic

Hi there. I am a post menopausal woman. I have had occasional light streaking of blood - similar to when i first started my periods. I discussed this with my gp last june 2021 and was told i would be referred for gynae appointment. i din't hear anything so assumed the pandemic was the cause. Recently i have developed constant soreness in my abdomen/pelvic region.I was discussing this with gp and asked could it be a gynaecologial issue.I told her i was waiting for an appointment since last june and she straight away said that i should have been seen within two weeks and on looking at my file said i had been mistakenly put through as a routine referral.Another referral has now been done.I understand at that appointment various things will be done. Can i ask for this to be done under general anaesthetic as i have found the pap smears that i have oone to be extremely painful and don't think i could tolerate anything that lasts longer than a pap smear. Can i get it done under a general ? im naturally worried and angry that whateer it is has been able to run amok for 9 months.I know these tst need to be done and consider myself to have a good pain threshold - however i am so worried about a painful proceedure. Many thanks in advance for any advice/information. i live i North Wales.

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am very sorry to hear about your situation and the worry it is causing.

Having a routine pelvic examination, which may be the first thing the gynaecologist will need to do, is not done under a general anaesthetic. It is not usually a painful investigation, but if you have concerns do mention it to the doctor. I am sure they will be as gentle as they can.

Further investigations you might need to have, such as an ultrasound scan, will not be painful and will not be done under a general anaesthetic. An investigation called a hysteroscopy can sometimes be carried out under a general anaesthetic but I am not sure if you will need to have this test.

Whatever tests and investigations you are going to have do make sure you feel that you have been given enough information about why you need them and how they are carried out. Let your doctor know about your concerns.

I hope you will be okay. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline

  • Hi worldcitizen

Having had countless pelvic exams, can I try to reassure you that I have never found a single one to be painful? Not even a hysteroscopy or biopsies.  The doctors, in my experience, have always been very gentle and always keep checking if you are ok. They will stop if you ask them to-nothing is done without you feeling ok about it. I’ve had a nurse holding my hand and chatting sometimes to distract me, and have honestly never had any issues. Let them know you are anxious and they will be very mindful of this. I really hope you can get whatever tests you need done successfully and that all will be fine. xx
