U5 thyroid ultrasound.

I am really worried. I had an thyroid ultrasound 5 weeks ago privately and it all came back as nodules all being U2 and justvrescan in 6 months. I then had another neck ultrasound on the nhs a week ago and they said they want me to have a biopsies as one nodule is U3 definantly as that a there is a suspicious lymph node and some calcification. So it brings it up to u5. I don't understand why both ultrasound results are so different, is it because things have got worse in 5 weeks?  Or did one radiologist not notice some things. I am really worried. Can anyone explain or has anyone else had really different ultrasounds within 5 weeks of each other?  I have to wait 18 days for the biopsy. Is that too long to wait? Thank you.

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I can appreciate your concern about the results of the two scans you had.

I am afraid that no one here can explain why you got the two different results, you will have to ask the doctors that carried them out why this happened. However, the latest scan you had, showed a more (slightly) worrying results but this does not necessarily mean you have cancer.

Putting the results together to get 5U is wrong. Each individual nodule gets a reading that is not added together.

U3 is not usually associated with cancer. However having the biopsy done will give more information and a definitive answer. Your NHS doctors have decided that it is safe for you to wait 18 weeks for a biopsy. I am afraid I cannot say if this should be done sooner, if you have any concerns you might want to go back to ask about it.

I hope you will be okay.  I realise that this must be worrying so please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline

  • Hey - just wanted to say I'm going through the same thing. Currently up at 4am panic reading posts about it! How are you doing? Do you have any more answers?

  • Hello, and thank you for posting.

It's been a while since alsm98 posted, so I wanted to make sure you got a response.

It's difficult for anyone to comment on what may be happening for you as each situation is so individual, and whilst the internet is a great for information it isn't a Doctor who can assess you or give you the results of any tests or scans you've had done.

Take care Togepi, and hopefully you will know more about your situation soon.

    Sarah.
