Foxglove

Hello, I went for a smear test today, I was asked why my last one was in 2014 !! And have not had one since , I explained how painful the last one was, and how vile the nurse who did it was to me, condescending, rude , vile al round, I had never felt pain during a smear before. Todays nurse was very shocked , and asked me to say if it was at any point painful, she used the smallest equipment, but despit two attempts, and being very kind, I was unable to go through with it due to the pain. This was 3 hours ago and I am still sore, she explained what could be done , and I settled for a referral to colposcopy clinic. I'm dreading it, it really should not be this painful.

  • Hi and thanks for your post

I'm sorry to hear you had a bad time during the smear attempt .Some people do find it painful despite the taker's best attempt to make it bearable. The clinic will be used to seeing people who have had a hard time and hopefully will be able to take the smear without causing you too much distress.

If you are peri (near)or post menopausal, the procedure can be more difficult , especially if the vaginal area is dry - this can sometimes be improved , making the the smear easier, by using an oestrogen cream for a few days before the smear- do have a chat with the GP if this could possibly be the case.

There are also a few tips suggested here by the charity Jo's Trust which may be helpful

I do hope things go better next time for you

    All the best

    Wanda
