Diagnosed with very rare cancer-passed from pillar to post

Bit of a rant sorry. I was being investigated for possible ovarian cancer which has been ongoing for 10 months after various ultra sounds ,scans and failed biopsies. I had my recent biopsy the end of January and was told over the phone I had cancer. The nurse came out with some big long words and when I asked for more explanation she said she didn’t have any as it was so rare.  The gynae team them washed there hands of me as it wasn’t a gynae issue but a colo rectal one and said they will refer me. 5 weeks later I have still had no conversation or appointment and after making an absolute pain of myself by phoning the  number I had every day I was finally told my case had been referred to a hospital 2 hours away as my local hospital has never dealt with this cancer. Then I found out someone had not signed a form so I was not actually refereed but hopefully will tomorrow.

anyway sorry rant over but if anyone has any details on my rare cancer can you let me know. Even Macmillan couldn’t help me. It occurs to 1 in a million people per year so by my reckoning there must be about 60 others who have this. For info it is a low grade carcinoma of the peritoneum in the gastro intestine.  I told you it was wordy!

  • Hello Soaringbird and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about all you have been through and I can appreciate this must be a difficult time for you.

When someone is in the middle of investigations and are being referred to different specialist teams it can be difficult to understand what is happening.  Being told you have rare type of cancer and then finding it difficult to get information can be worrying.

Your description of a "low grade carcinoma of the peritoneum in the gastro intestine" is I think not a complete term or name. Therefore it not possible to get you the information you want at the moment. However, I do think that once the colorectal team look into your situation you will get more information.

Once you know more please do get back in touch with us and we will do our best to find information for you.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,
