constant bleeding

I have been bleeding for a month straight i have a contraceptive coil but ive recently had it checked and it seems to be in place as it should be, i have spoken to the GP and they cant seem to think of a reason for my prolonged periods which have left me bleeding for 20+ days, i am only 19 therefore i am not eligable for a smear test. i also have constant lower back pain cramps and bloating, and was wondering if anyone had any advice?

  • Hello and thanks for your post

There can be many reasons why women experience bleeding in between periods and you can read about this on the NHS website by clicking here.

So, your heavy bleeding symptoms could be related to different gynaecological conditions, such as fibroids, or hormone imbalances.

As you probably know the cervical screening programme (smear test) begins at 24 years 6 months. The NHS cervical screening laboratories are very strict and won't process smears taken from women much under this age. It is also not really a test for people who have symptoms.

All we can really advise you to do is to go back and discuss your on going symptoms with your GP. They may consider doing further tests over time if this is needed or refer you to a gynaecologist . It’s the gynaecologist who would make the decision on whether you need to have a smear test.

I hope things improve for you soon. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
