I'd like some advice please

Hello!

Bit of a long story but I'll try to keep it short.

In Jan 2017 I was diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma- stage 2b. I had no symptoms apart from being ill a lot with tonsillitis, I had it every few weeks for about a year. The drs always said my white blood cells were up because of the infections, turns out the infections were because of the cancer! I found a lump on my neck and was in treatment within a couple of weeks. I'm now almost 5 years in remission.

So for what is worrying me - I have PCOS and have always had very heavy periods, I have to use adult incontinence pants as nothing else will hold me overnight. My periods have never been regular and come and go when they like, the longest I had was around 2 months. Cut to now and I'm 7 months in on a never ending period.  I had a break of 4 days which luckily happened as I was due for an internal scan which showed I had a thicker than normal endometrium. I was referred to the gynecologist in December and have read online that its up to a 36 week wait... hooray. What is worrying me (besides the period) is I have had 5 outer ear infections in the past 6 months, alternating ears. I never had problems with my ears until now and it's very annoying and painful. I don't swim or wear headphones or anything else that would be causing this to re occur. I have never had a smear, have been cancelling and rebooking for the past 5 months as they cannot do it whilst I'm bleeding. I'm tired constantly and on iron tablets for anaemia which make me sick

I lose about an egg cup of blood a day and have the odd pains. It's ruining my work, my relationship and my mental health is terrible. As well as worrying about cancer again it just doesn't feel great constantly bleeding. I'm suffering financially too.

My question is do you think I should contact the Dr again? Contact someone else ? 7 months is a long time and all they told me was to wait for the referral. It could be another half a year! I was 26 when diagnosed and I'm almost 31 now.

My aunt has just had a full hysterectomy because of endometriosis and I'm not sure if that is what I have.

Thanks for any advice or similar stories.

  • Hiya,

I do feel for you -have had my own experiences with heavy bleeding and it really does affect your quality of life.

Personally I think you should go back to your doctor to push this,  - is there a different GP in your practice or perhaps a sympathetic practice nurse.

    Bestvof luck to you xx

  • Hello GemmaMadeline and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear that you were treated for Hodgkin's lymphoma in the past and that you have concerns about your health now.

I do think it would be okay to let your GP know that you are still waiting for the appointment and that that you still have symptoms.  I am not sure if this will speed things up for you but you should let the GP that referred you know.

The NHS has information about the causes of vaginal bleeding on their website. While some of the causes can be due to cancer there are many other non cancer reasons for this to happen, you can see this information by clicking here

Regarding your other symptoms of a persistent ear infection you might want to discuss this with your Hodgkin lymphoma team. Of course this is unlikely to be connected but because you are worried you should let your cancer team know.

I hope this has been of some help. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
