Fatigue following lumpectomy

I'm 67 and had a left side mastectomy following the discovery of DCIS 12 years ago. Recovery was good.
Following recently being diagnosed with Stage 1 invasive breast cancer on the other side, a week ago I had a lumpectomy. The dressing came off yesterday and the wound is clean, sore but no painkillers needed.
My main concern is the exhaustion I'm feeling. I'm sleeping for at least 8 hours at night but sometimes longer but I'm still very tired in the day.
I've been able to do 30 minute walks no problem but the tiredness is dreadful.  I am able to things as normal like cooking etc.  but feel so tired.

Is this normal?
Also how do I care for the wound? Is bio oil ok?

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

It can take a few weeks to fully recover from surgery and anaesthesia, so I wouldn't unduly worry, and allow your body to rest.

Oddly, daily exercise such as half an hour's walking can help recovery, and reduce fatigue. If you still feel very tired, beyond a month or so, then ask your GP to run some routine bloods to rule out anaemia, or thyroid issues.

Bio oil can be used on scars, once they are fully healed. So, probably, a bit early to use it yet. Do check in with your hospital breast care team, or specialist nurse, about it as well.

    I hope this is useful,

    Best wishes,

    Vanda
