Can taking the pill affect CA125 result?

Hi my wife has been on the pill and has had a blood test to check her CA125, is it true that the pill can lower level if so how long should she wait to rebook for another CA125 blood test

  • Hello Dazzler74 and thanks for your post.

To answer your question, it seems there has been some research to say that the oral contraceptive pill can be associated with lower CA125 levels, but I don't know if this is relevant to your wife's situation or if it means that the CA125 test needs to be repeated - it might not.

Although CA125 levels can be above the normal range in ovarian cancer, they can be raised in several other conditions as well, for example fibroids.

CA125 testing isn't used as a way of screening for ovarian cancer in the UK.  Screening is looking for a disease in someone who has no symptoms or signs of it and seems to be healthy.

The CA125 test can be used to assess and diagnose symptoms that might be due to ovarian cancer, but all diagnostic test results need to be interpreted in the context of whatever is going on, for example taking into account symptoms, other test results, medical history and what any examination shows.

If your wife is concerned about her CA125 levels or ongoing symptoms, she needs to speak to her doctor and take it from there.

I hope this is of some use.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
