Pleural effusion

I have developed ongoing pleural effusions from receiving pembrolizumab and I was wondering if like me others have this. I stopped treatment 7 months ago but unfortunately I still have the condition. I have had a permanent drain fitted and drain every other day and the weekly total drained is 2.5L.

I also have continuous edema throughout my body.

Feeling really glum!

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation. I can understand how uncomfortable it must be for you.

You may hear from other patients and their experiences. You have posted in ask the nurses but if you post in another area you may find that you get more responses.

We have information on our website about treatment for pleural effusions that you may want to read about here.

If you scroll down you can see information about the Optimum trial which was comparing ways to treat fluid build up around the lung. Have a look here.

Oedema around the body can be so uncomfortable. I was looking on the Marie Curie website to see if they had some tips to help manage this condition. You can see the information here.

I hope that you are getting support at home from your friends and family.  Do make the nurses and doctors aware of any new symptoms so they can try and control them as much as possible.

Trying to stay positive whilst all this is going on must be hard. It is natural to feel glum at times so do try and share how you are feeling with the people caring and looking after you.  We do have some tips that you may find helpful to look at on our website here.

The charity Macmillan run free counselling courses which you may find helpful to talk through how you are feeling.

Have a look at their courses here.

I hope that some of these links may be helpful. If you feel that you would like to chat through any of this with one of the nurses on the helpline then you are more then welcome to give us a ring.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
