Positive stool test

I'm only 21 I've had a positive stool test my gp gave me another test to do I only suffer from bloating and acid reflux what could the bleeding in my stool be

  • Hello Brad090 and thanks for posting us a question,

I assume that the test you did was a FIT test to look for hidden blood in stools/poo. You have probably already read that blood in poo can sometimes be due to bowel cancer, but it isn't always and can occur for a number of reasons including bowel inflammation, polyps (harmless growths) and piles and sometimes no cause is ever found for it.

Bowel cancer would be very unusual in someone of your age so it isn't a likely explanation. This is because the risk of cancer increases as we get older so cancer is much more common in older people.

When test results come back with an abnormal reading they often trigger alarm, but a lot of the time nothing serious turns out to be the matter.

It makes sense to repeat the test and I hope your GP can sort this out for you soon.

Give us a ring if you want to talk anything over. Our number is 0808 800 4040 and we are here weekdays fro 9-5.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
