Scared it’s leukaemia

Hi,

im a 22 year old female who has been getting itchy Petechiae rashes for the last year, a lot of unexplained bruising on my legs and fatigue. I went for a few blood tests last year and one doctor said I had high haemoglobin levels and another doctor said my results were fine. I've seen a few other people my age saying they had the same symptoms and it turns out they had blood cancer so now I'm petrified I've got leukaemia and the doctor didn't pick it up on my blood tests, as it's usually detected via a scan. I don't know what to do

  • Hello and thanks for your post

There can be many reasons why someone might develop petechiae such as viral infections, a low numbers of platelets in the blood (platelets are important for blood clotting), allergic reactions and as a common reaction to some drugs, such as antibiotics.

The symptoms of leukaemia are often due to something being wrong with the number of blood cells in the blood. This is because the abnormal  leukaemic cells crowd out the bone marrow and get in the way of regular blood cell production.  As a result, certain symptoms can occur for example recurrent infections, bleeding and anaemia. So if any of these were due to leukaemia then I think you would expect to see abnormalities in the blood test especially the white blood cell count ( WCC) but further tests would usually be required if leukaemia was suspected.

I presume your WCC was fine and this is why your doctor didn’t think you needed further tests. But do talk things over with them if you are still worried. Hopefully, they will be able to reassure you.

Give us a ring if you want to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,
