Borderline changes and HPV Positive

I received a letter a few days ago (about four weeks after my smear test) explaining that my smear was abnormal and I have tested positive for high risk HPV and borderline changes in squamous cells? This is my first smear test and I am only 25. I don't have any symptoms. I've received another letter today saying my colposcopy is booked for next week and I am freaking out. I can't understand why my colposcopy would be arranged so soon unless they think there is something seriously wrong, I thought people had to wait weeks for this if there was only borderline changes? The nurse who did my smear test said everything looked normal and healthy down there too, I honestly just want to break down and cry I can't help but think the worst now.

  • Hello Valleygirlx and thanks for posting,

I know this is unsettling but try not to take it to heart - this all sounds very routine and doesn't sound concerning to me. But I think being upset is a common reaction.

The colposcopy is a standard examination used in the cervcial screening programme and I think they try and fit people in as soon as possible because they know abnormal smears trigger so much worry. Don't be reading anything into being seen sooner than you expected.

Remember cervical screening is all about prevention, the idea being to pick up abnormal cells (and abnormal cells on a smear are not cancer) that might possibly develop into cancer much later on in the future, so they can either monitor the cells until they go back to normal or treat them when needed.

I do appreciate that this sort of thing can cause a lot of upset but try not to let it run away with you.

Give us a call tomorrow if you want to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here 9-5, weekdays,

    Best wishes,
