Is it still there ?

I had a breast cancer lumpectomy 5 weeks ago and am due to have radiotherapy in 2 weeks. My lovely cocker spaniel has sniffed my breast since (or maybe even before) I found out I had cancer. I've now had the surgery but he is still sniffing it - does this mean I still have it ?
as far as I am aware the radiotherapy is aduvent to kill any possible cancer that they can't see but this sniffing is worrying me that there is actually something left behind (they said surgery went well with clear margins)

what do you think please ?

  • Hi and thanks for the post

Animals can cause anxiety in people when you read of their potential ability to 'sniff out' cancer cells , though much more research is needed to understand how reliable this is.

It's important to rely more on the science at the moment and it's good to know that you have had the lump removed with a good clear margin. Radiotherapy is routinely given when the lump alone is removed , to ensure that any rogue cells will be killed off.

Depending on whether the tumour was oestrogen positive, hormone tablets will also be given for 5-10 yrs to keep any oestrogenic effect at bay. Regardless of this however, you will be regularly monitored with an annual mammogram and of course, I'm sure you are aware of reporting anything new or different to your breast cancer nurse at any time or if you are worried.

Do give us a ring if you would like to go over any of this - on Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

Try and not worry about this if you can - the dog may well be focussing more on your breast due to the surgery you had done on the area.

All the best and I hope your recovery continues to go well
