  • Hi Nik

It's not surprising that it's such a stressful time for you.

It's good news though that the CT scan was clear , so do take heart from this.

Before surgery, the doctors will have been able to assess your kidney function and will not have thought of doing surgery if it was going to hugely compromise your health.  People can function normally after surgery to both kidneys, but it's possible that they will keep a close check on how well the kidney is coping, with regular blood tests.

The KidneyCancerUK  charity website   has some more information on living with kidney cancer , including information on support groups and blogs.

Please do give us a call though if you would like to go over any of this - on Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

All the best and I hope you have a good recovery

  • Thank you for getting back

Spoke to my GP today for a sick note for work, who read CT report to me that said no sign of metastic spread to chest abdomen or pelvis.

I would like to talk to some one do i just ring that number. I feel fine have no symptoms at all and my current kidney function is 100% all blood tests ok. I have read great stories of people having kidney out and being ok was just that fact that its on both that has worried me

  • Hello Nik and thanks for getting back to us,

It is quite rare to have cancer in both kidneys at the same time (although it isn't unheard of), but because it is uncommon you might not come accross all that many people on forums who have had it. Even so I am sure there are a fair few people out there doing ok so don't let this worry you - it is just a reflection of it being relatively rare and that not everyone wants to tell their story.

There can be uncertainty with cancer as there aren't always answers to every question and seldom guarantees about the future success of treatment (even though it may go really well). This can be a tough thing to adjust to.

Feel free to call us if you want a chat. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open weekdays from 9-5.

    Best wishes,

    Julia

  • Thanks for all help and advice

Seen Dr left has to come out and right needs a partial will be one opp. My left is knackered but Dr says i still have a GFR 90 even though left might not work properly at moment

They expect that to drop after surgery but in functional levels. They say its seems be contained to kidneys so surgery best approach hopefully in next 2 weeks

  • Hello Nik and thanks for the update,

I am glad you have been able to talk to the doctors and have some idea of when your surgery will be. Waiting is seldom easy, but it sounds like the doctors are being positive.  I hope everything goes to plan.

    Best wishes,

    Julia

  • Thank you

seen surgeon now left kidney has to come out. Right has tumour in mid area its round he plans to cut it out and sew remaining kidney together to leave 2/3rds that should then function well.

he was confident said 80% he can do it

scared now that are mentioning dialysis if anything goes wrong . They have said its to cover all bases but like i said he is confident and im well fit with normal kidney function at moment . Also will be one open surgery which sounds big to me , surgeon said take about 3 hours

    just scared cant rationilise it

    nik

  • Hello Nik and thank you for getting back in touch with us.

I realise that this has been a difficult time for you and you have been through so much. Rationalising it could be difficult now, but as time passes this will hopefully easier to live with.

I do also think that your doctors have to inform you about all possible eventualities and discuss dialysis but remember that you have been given very good odds on keeping your kidney function.

I hope you have support around you and that you can talk about how you are feeling. Remember you are welcome to give us a call .

Another charity called Kidney Cancer UK also have information and support, you might also want to see their website here

I hope it all goes well.

    Take care,

    Caroline
