Normal Colonoscopy

having trawled the internet as we all do, I thought I would post my question here....

I was put on a 2WW due to an abnormal FIT test.  Blood in stool.   I have never had fresh blood when I wipe, never had piles or anal fissures.

GP fast tracked me as I have been experirencing other symptoms too.  I have a terrific GP!

Had colonoscopy yesterday.   As I had a hysterectomy some 12 years ago I was aware that when there is no longer a uterus in situ, the colon drops into that space and can cause looping.    My procedure yesterday took over an hour due to excess looping.  I have a high pain threashold but even with Fentanyl, Midazolam and good old Entonox, I was in agony at times.  I'm so glad my prep was effective and I had a super team in the room with me... we all had a laugh at times which always helps.

Rambling here.

My question is... if my FIT test was abnormal and microscopic blood was found, what else could have caused this?   As I say, I had no polyps.. .clean as a whistle...no piles or tears.   My gums don't bleed either.

I have a full CT scan on monday 28th Feb to explore other things.  I'm not a worrier at all.. never have had anxiety over health matters.  Just find myself curious about what could have caused the blood.

Oh and I'm 61.

Hope to hear from from you soon.

Many thanks.

  • Hello H and thanks for posting,

I am glad to know you managed to cope with the colonoscopy and that everything looks ok.

A smallish percentage of colonoscopies turn out to be normal despite hidden blood having been picked up previously.  I think most times there isn't a clear cut explanation so it can be a mystery although there seems to be relationship between the amount of bleeding and finding a cause (FIT results are positive over a specific value, but there can be a wide range above that).  If an area of inflammation was causing the bleeding it could possibly have healed up in the interval between having the test and the colonoscopy and I suppose there is the possibility of missing a little polyp, but probably not very likely.

I am sorry that I can't satisfy your curiosity any better.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
