oesophagus cancer treatment

Hi All,

My mother will be starting palliative radiotherapy this week for oesophagus cancer - stage 4. Chemo was a disaster unfortunately.

Does anyone know if she can start the Sucralfate medicine the morning before the first session (appt is at 12.30) to prevent mucosis? Huge thanks to all.

  • Hello Londres and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your mum's situation. I am sorry not to have got back to you before 12.30.

As we are not involved in your mum's care it is very difficult for us to give advice about someone's medication.

From what I have read it has been used to help prevent gastric irritation when given before and after  radiotherapy.

Try to encourage her to speak to the radiographers or the nurse at the hospital so she can be given instructions as to when she should be taking it.

I am sorry not to help more. If you or your mum have any other questions then you are more then welcome to speak to the nurses on the helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the Best,

    Catherine

  • Thankyou so much for your help. I'll make sure we ask some questions on Thursday as we also don't know how the 5 day course will be organised as we're starting on Thursday. Not sure if mum will have radiotherapy treatment over the weekend.

    Very much appreciate your support.
