Ovarian cyst/tumour without an ovary

7 years ago I had a 15cm ovarian cyst that crushed my right ovary and tube, underwent surgery and had the lot removed.

in 2018 had another scan they didn't find anything..

I've just had another scan due to pain adamant I had an ovarian cyst on my left side the pain is hurrendous, the results came back that I have a 10cm complex ovarian cyst/tumour on my right side again which I don't understand, the doctors phoned me just said I had a cyst and that they was referring me to a gynaecologist and that was it haven't heard anything since. Yet having access to my medical notes it clearly states that the mass has multiple internal septations, increased vascularity within the cyst and an urgernt appointment is required with the gynaecologist and tumour markers need to be done.

of course I've tried to research it but it's coming up blank. Im just wondering if anyone else has been through anything similar because it's confusing the life out of me and im so worried.

thanks in advance

  • Hello there

I am sorry to hear about the pain you are in and appreciate this must be a worrying time for you.

Unfortunately no one here can say what this cyst means for you and i'm afraid it is a matter of waiting to see what the gynaecologist has to say once you see them.

You may hear other people's stories but remember they are their stories and not yours and the outcome could be very different to yours, so try not compare if you can.

Not all cysts that are complex with worrying features will turn out to be cancer, but it is important that something more serious is ruled out hence the further tests and need to see the gynaecologist. It seems you have been referred on urgently and hopefully will be seen very soon, do chase up the GP again if you haven't heard anything within 2 weeks of the phone call to find out more.

When a complex or large ovarian cyst is found they often carry out a risk of malignancy index (RMI) score using the features of the cyst from the ultrasound together with the tumour marker level ( known as ca125) and the menopausal status of the woman to calculate the risk of it being cancer. This helps to guide the urgency and type of treatment needed.

please get back if you have more questions or if you prefer to speak to one of the nurses give us a call on 0808 800 4040, Monday-Friday 9-5.

I hope everything works out okay for you.

    Take care

    Naomi

  • Hey Naomi,

Thankyou for replying I appreciate your kind words.

I'm only 28 so not going through the menopause just yet. most things I've read relate to menopause or if you have an ovary. I've read the only way to stop a cyst coming back is to completely remove the ovary which they did so I'm struggling to understand how this has happened.

I phoned the referral centre and they said the consultants still haven't looked at it and it's been 2 weeks I'm literally at my wits end. I know I need to stop googling but It's hard when I want to know what's wrong with me :(

  • Hi again and thanks for getting back

I understand this situation must be a bit baffling since you have had your right ovary removed but try and avoid searching too much on the internet even though it can be addictive. It cannot speak into yours or anyone else circumstances, i'm afraid to say and is likely to worry you more.

I can't say for sure but sometimes some ovarian tissue can be left behind after the removal of the ovary and this enables ovarian cysts to form. This is called ovarian remnant syndrome. It is incredibly rare but this could be a reason for your current cyst.

Age is on your side and although no one can reassure you completely at this point in time hopefully everything will be okay.

Take care and keep yourself busy with other things whilst you wait.

    Naomi
