Waiting on biopsy results

Had 3 punch biopsies 12 weeks ago. Still waiting on results and starting to get a bit anxious. Phoned hospital only to be told a back log which I totally understand. Lost my dad to Melanoma so probably just over cautious.

  • Hello and thanks for the post

3 months does seem a long time to wait for results despite there being a current backlog throughout the country. It may be an idea to try and get back to them again or to try and speak to the consultant's secretary saying it has been 3 months. Your GP may have heard in the meantime , so do check with them too.

Finally, you may want to check with PALS (patient advisory and liaison service ) at your hospital to see whether they can expedite the results or at least get some more information about how much longer you may need to wait.

I do hope you get the results soon

  • That's a long time.  My melanoma result was chased up after 10 days by my furuious GP - but back in 1997.

i'm waiting on another biopsy & have been advised to call back later this week - 14 days.

  • Hello,

I have been waiting for 8 weeks now and I just keep getting told it takes a while and it will be here shortly. I was just wondering how long your results took to come back in the end? Thanks

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I see that Felix 22 doesn’t appear to have been active on here for a while, so I thought I would jump on and post.

We know that biopsy waiting times in the NHS can vary depending on the workload and staffing in local laboratories but I'm afraid we don't know exactly what is happening at a local level. But 8 weeks does seem a long time to wait.

I can't tell you when you will get your results, but you can try giving them a ring again to see what you can find out.

There is no easy way to get through the waiting times, but many people tell us that keeping busy and sticking to a routine can help a little. But until you both know this is bound to be a worry.

If you don't hear anything by next week it might be worth discussing this with the PALS (Patient Advice and Liaison Service) at your hospital to ask them to look in this for you. Their contact details are here.

I hope you know more about your situation soon. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • Hi, I have been waiting 17 weeks in Cardiff for skin biopsy results. I have phoned my gp and also phoned the consultants secretary 3 times. I am so anxious it's making me ill. What do I do now? How do I get my results? Over four month wait is totally unacceptable.

  • Hello and thanks for your post

Waiting when you are worried is very stressful. I'm afraid I can't tell you when you will get your results, but you can try giving them a ring again at the hospital to see what you can find out.

As I said to Brewer, you might find it useful to discuss this with the PALS (Patient Advice and Liaison Service) at your hospital to ask them to look in this for you. Their contact details are here.

I hope you know more about your situation soon. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

  • Hi there, I can see this post was a while ago so not sure if you will see this.. but I am also in Cardiff and had a mole excised yesterday for biopsy. I was told at the end of the procedure that the waiting time for results is up to 12 weeks, even when put through as urgent. I was quite shocked when she said this and also very concerned as in less than 12 weeks I'm due to go on a 4 month trip to Asia!

Hoping that the biopsy comes back clear but if it doesn't I am very worried that I'm not going to be here to receive results and/or go back for further treatment. When I told the doctor this she seemed to think it would be fine but I'm not sure why she would say that if she just said there was a 12 week wait.

Were you given an estimated wait time for your results at your appointment? And if you don't mind me asking how long did the results end up taking in the end?

I am planning on chasing up the results ahead of the estimated wait time due to my travel plans but if they are more likely to be late than early then I might be in a sticky situation. I assume you went to the Heath dermatology dept for yours?

  • Hello Daisychain00,

You may not get a reply from Stingray because they posted 9 months ago. However, even if you do please remember that how long people are waiting will be different because of the constraints in their own hospital. We know across the whole of the UK people are waiting longer now for their results.

I think that it is a good idea to contact the dermatology clinic, where you had the biopsy done, to get an update on your results. Hopefully, you will know more about your situation before you go away.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
