Lump in breast

I was diagnosed with Fibroadenoma in Dec 2021, benign breast tumor. I have a follow up appointment in Feb, 3 months after my diagnosis because I have cancer run through our family. I've noticed my lump hasn't stopped growing, more than doubled in size. It feels as though I may have 1 or 2 more lumps and breast thickening. My breast has also be irritating/itchy and uncomfortable and painful at times.

should I be worried? I haven't spoken to my gp anymore as I have this appointment in Feb.

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

As you have been seen fairly recently in the breast clinic, this isn't likely to be anything serious. Some women are just more likely to get benign lumps and other breast conditions.

You are best to wait until your next breast clinic appointment this month, as they are best placed to assess you and advise you. Try not to prod or examine the breast area, as you can cause tissue swelling and irritation. Take an antihistamine to help with skin itching, and this will help reduce the itch scratch cycle too.

    There is useful information here,

    With best wishes,

  • Following my follow up appointment, the Consultant has agreed to remove my Tumour. I have surgery 3rd May, which is a very quick turn around.

I feel anxious about the operation, how my breast  will look, it probably sounds really silly, being young and single to then have to explain what's happened isn't the conversation you want to be having. Nevertheless the less could be much worst. Once the Tumor has been removed it will be sent off to the labs for further testing, this gives me some sense of comfort. To be 100% sure it's not cancer,

Has anyone had lumpectomy, be great if you can share any stories and results. How you found the process,

  • Hello and thank you for getting back in touch with us.

Your breast care team should be able to answer your questions as they will be carrying our the surgery and know you better than we do.  If you have not signed your surgery consent form yet then when you do it will be an opportunity to discuss what your breast will look like after surgery.

I think the information on our website about breast cancer surgery will be helpful to read. It is about the procedure, and what happens afterwards. Although this is for women with breast cancer ( you will hopefully not have it) it is still useful to read, you can see it here

Also you might find that if you post in another part of Cancer Chat you will have it seen by more people. See the list of the other areas to the left of this page.

I hope you will be okay. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
