Colonoscopy

Hello

I had a colonoscopy today & the procedure couldn’t be completed because I was in extreme pain. I am very disappointed with the outcome as my pain threshold is usually quite good.  Was I overreacting?? Or is this amount of pain normal?

I felt the sedation didn’t work for me. And I am left a bit traumatised to be honest.

Why would this have happened?

  • Hello Edunne12 and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to learn that your colonoscopy couldn't be completed and turned out to be horrible experience.  I can understand why this has troubled you - other people having this or similar unsuccessful procedures have also told us they felt traumatised afterwards so you are not alone in feeling this way.

I don't think you were overreacting, colonoscopies are known to have the potential to cause discomfort and pain. This is because the bowel wall along with membranes and ligaments close by can be stretched as the colonoscopy tube is inserted and passed along; the tube can also sometimes coil up and loop to cause pressure and more stretching.

I think what happened was probably just bad luck but I hope it doesn't continue to play on your mind.
