Scratched mole

Hi.

I'm in for a mole removal and a biopsy on it this week. I was picking the mole and I damaged it so it has a small wound on it now. It won't be healed before it's removed.

Can this alter my biopsy results? Could the damaged skin from picking show up as cancer?

Thanks

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

Try not to worry, scratching the mole and the scab shouldn't affect the procedure or the results of the biopsy.

I hope all goes well for you and you know more soon.

    Take care

  • Hi,

I did something similar, I have hundreds of moles on my back and have had several removed as some pre-cancerous.

I recently scratched one at the side, it had a raised centre anyway but turned very dark/black. I was rushed in for an appt with a dermatologist who said it had a scab on it and doesn't look suspicious, he gave me some steroid cream to put on and I'm due back on Tuesday for it to be checked, however the black scab/mole on the centre has fallen off and just left me with a normal looking mole underneath and an indent. Is this normal? I'm worried that because there was a dark almost black raised mole in the middle (which is what has fallen off) could it grow back? I have pictures to show the dermatologist too.
    thanks

  • Hello Ali and thanks for posting,

I can understand you asking, but I can't say for sure if what you describe is normal - but it may be and I don't think you need to worry. Taking photographs was a good idea .The best person to ask about this is the dermatologist so it is good that you have an appointment just next week. I hope it all goes well.

    Best wishes,
