Can SCC spread to breast?

Hello, I went to have a check up with my GP. She advised me to get my moles checked, so I went to the Dr she recommended. He referred me to a dermatologist with suspected BCC on the skin between my breasts. The dermatologist suspects possible SCC. She has done an excision and sent off a biopsy which I am waiting for the results from (due 23 Sept). My question is: what would be the next steps if this is SCC, is there a possibility of it spreading to my lymph nodes and becoming breast cancer? Is this something that should be ruled out with further tests?  Are there specific questions I should ask when I receive the biopsy results?  I don't want to overreact, if the excision is all that would be done then that's great. Thanks for reading, sorry it was longwinded!

  • Hello

Thank you for posting a question for us.  I am assuming that by SCC you are talking about squamous cell skin cancer.  This is not the same as a breast cancer.  If it spread to the skin of your breast or to lymph nodes close to your breast, it would be considered an SCC that had spread, rather than a breast cancer.  SCC behaves and is treated differently to breast cancer, so information you might read about breast cancer that had spread to the lymph nodes would not apply to you.

I must admit I was a little surprised that you stated you were expecting the results in September, I would have thought they could have got them to you sooner than this.

Sometimes an excision biopsy is all that is needed if it is a SCC.  Usually SCC do not spread, but if there is any risk that they think it might have done or grown more deeply into the skin, they may want to do some further investigations.  If you needed further treatment this could be either more surgery or radiotherapy to the areas affected.

In the unlikely event that a SCC has spread it is possible that drug treatments might be needed.  But I think the most important thing now is to get the results of the biospy and see if any further treatment is needed.  You might find it helpful to read our information on treating skin cancers here

I hope that is helpful, it might help to give the nurses a call on 0808 800 4040 to talk this through.

Do get back to us if you have more questions

  • Thank you so much for your reply, that was really helpful.  Yes it is suspected squamous cell skin cancer, however it is on the skin of my breast so it is nice to know that that won't develop into breast cancer.  I had total brain fog, meant the results would be 23 Feb not September. They did a large excision so hoping they got everything and that's the end of it. Thanks again for clearing things up for me, it really is appreciated
