My mum

My mum is 79 years old and has cancer of kidneys, lungs, spine, bones & lymphnodes.  Mum now has an infection and on anti biotics & oxygen.    She has been in hospital for a month & weighs 5 stone !!!! Docs are now asking us to put mum in a care home  but we know its going to take quite sometime to source and move my poor mum.  Can you advise what are our options as we know mum doesn't have very long ??

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I am so sorry to hear about your mum and appreciate this must be such a difficult time.

The options available will depend on what is available in the area your mum is. Whilst it sounds like your mum is very unwell if the doctors are suggesting a nursing home it doesn't sound like they think she is needing end of life care at this point in time.

If I am wrong about this, which I could be as I am not involved in your mum's care and she is indeed in her last days and weeks then it may be possible for your mum to stay in hospital ( if she is in the last few days and they don't think they can move her) or either bring your mum home, with support from community nurses and specialised equipment. Or perhaps it would be more appropriate for her to be transferred to a hospice for care if there is a bed available. It is important for your mum to be involved in these decisions if she is able to communicate these as her last wishes.

Often discharge planning for patients is discussed by a key named nurse on the ward alongside the patient and family to discuss their wishes and want needs to be organised for a discharge. Do ask if such a meeting can be arranged to talk all of this through with them.

I hope this is helpful and you find a solution that is best for your mum soon.

Do get back if you need to or give us a call on 0808 800 4040 monday-friday 9-5.

    All the best

    Naomi
