Do I need to worry

Hope this is ok to post, my grandaughter has a lump in her breast, her gp sent an urgent referral to the breast clinic and said it would be 2 weeks, but after waiting 3 weeks my grandaughter rang them and they said that they are dealing with more urgent cases, is this because she is only 24, we are sick with worry.

  • Hello there

You are very welcome to post on here. I am sorry to hear your grand daughter has a breast lump and is needing to wait longer to be seen at the breast clinic.

Times like this are a worry and waiting can be unsettling. Unfortunately the pandemic means there are backlogs and sometimes people are needing to wait longer than 2 weeks to be seen in a breast clinic. All women who are seen in the breast unit will have their referral assessed to see how urgently they need to be seen taking into account their symptoms and age.

Breast cancer in young women is rare and most women are diagnosed over the age of 50 once women have gone through the menopause.

Hopefully she will be seen soon so she can get some answers. In the meantime try not to over think things,  breast lumps are extremely common and most will be caused by a simple cyst or a build up of fatty tissue called a fibroadenoma and even more so in young women who tend to have more fibrous and lumpy breast tissue. You can read more about this here.

Encourage your grand daughter to chase this up again if she doesn't hear anything in the next week or if she is noticing any further changes to the lump or the breast.

Wishing your grand daughter all the best and hope everything is okay and you can all get some peace of mind soon.

    Take care

    Naomi
