Cin1 to CIN 2

Hi. I've had abnormal smears on and off since around 2016. I'm just 30. I had a smear earlier in 2021 which had shown HPV and high grade dyskaryosis. I had a follow up in July that had shown cin 1 and maybe HPV (can't remember). So I had another in December and the results have show cin 1 cin 2 and koilocytosis. I'm due for another follow up in July this year. I've never worried before I about my results. But is it normal to have cin1 then six months later cin 2 show up.

  • Hi and thanks for the post

It's good you're going regularly for your smears but can imagine it's a bit stressful still seeing some changes in the cells.

It can take a while in  some people for changes to get back to normal. Though HPV isn't always present in mild changes , if the immune system hasn't got rid of it(and it can take a couple of years sometimes), abnormal cells may continue to be present. That's why a 6 monthly smear is taken - to keep an eye on things and see if treatment is necessary once it gets to CIN2 or 3.

Although there isn't anything you can do to get rid of HPV, it's known that smoking and a system that's a bit run down ,can take longer to eliminate HPV.

These abnormal cells are not cancer and the main thing is that they are being kept an eye on - it's not uncommon for some people to continue to show mild changes which don't need treatment usually, to increase to CIN2 instead of just reverting back to normal again . I imagine you will be having a colposcopy which will show your cervix in more detail and more information will be given.

Try and not stress about this -easier said than done - but the main thing is that you are having regular follow up . Hopefully things will start to settle down soon for you.

  • My smear test came back positive for HPV and I just had my colposcopy appointment which suggest I have cin2 but I am waiting for my biopsy results. I am really scared.

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

Waiting for biopsy results I know can be worrying. There is a really good chance that this will be what the colposcopist (this is the health professional who the colposcopy) says it is.  Most people will not be diagnosed with cancer. I hope you get the results soon.

It has been some time since other people have posted on this thread so you might not get any other replies here.  You may find you get more people seeing your post, if you post somewhere else on Cancer Chat. You can see these areas to the left of this page.
