Tongue cancer recovery - returning to normal life

Hi everyone,

I'm posting on behalf of a close relative who has been left with life-altering difficulties as a result of tongue cancer. Sincer operation and radiotherapy to remove the cancer, he can no longer swallow solids foods so is following a predominantly liquid diet. This makes it incredibly hard to travel, for example going on holiday. I'm wondering if anyone else had had this issue and has any suggestions for hotels/resorts that would accommodate this? Also any advice for transitioning back to solids would be great. Thank you in advance.

  • Hello and thanks for getting in touch

I am sorry to hear about your relative and how the treatments side effects are affecting his quality of life.

As you can read on our side effects of treatment pages here and here it isn't unusual for patients who have undergone surgery and radiotherapy in the head and neck region to lose their ability to eat and swallow during and following treatment. As times goes on and the swelling subsides and settles things should improve but it can be a slow process.

There is information about moving from liquids to a soft diet eventually building up to solids in the above links as well as so food and menu ideas here , but it is important the patient goes at their pace so they can gradually gain confidence and feel in control alongside the encouragement of the people around them.

If needed a dietician can get involved to advise patients along the way and to ensure they are getting all the nutrition they need, so do encourage to relative to ask about being referred to one if they are struggling with this.

In terms of travelling and going on holiday we have a section of information at this link but others on the forum may be able to advise on holiday companies who may cater for these types of dietary needs.

I hope this is some help but do get back if you have more questions. You are also welcome to call the nurse helpline on 0808 800 4040, Mon-Fri 9-5.

All the very best to you and your relative

    Naomi
