Mammogram revealed a breast mass, had biopsy yesterday i

I have a mass in my left breast, picked up by routine mammogram. Does the word mass mean it's definitely cancer?  I'm worried sick and scared. The word mass is making me fear the worst. Had another mammogram yesterday, followed by ultrasound scan, and then 3 biopsy's taken. Have to wait 2 weeks for results. My breast is really painful after the biopsy, pain is going into my shoulder, never had the shoulder pain before, is this normal after a biopsy.

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about your situation and I can appreciate your worry.

The word mass in not a substitute for the word cancer.

I realise that having tests and investigations done and then waiting for results is difficult.

It is normal to have some pain after the biopsies were taken. Sometimes pain can be referred which means that you feel pain at a different location from where it was caused. Hopefully the pain should gradually get better and in a few days should not be felt much or have gone. However, if the pain gets worse, do seek the advice of your GP or the breast team as this might be the sign of an infection. Although most breast biopsies do not get infected.

I think it is normal to be concerned but do try and not worry to too much. If you are able to try and carry on with things that can keep you busy and get support from people you are close to.

I hope you will be okay. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care
