Wife has just been diagnosed with Covid

She was due to have her 2nd docetaxel (out of 3) this coming Thursday, but that's obviously been scuppered.

My question is, when she was at hospital yesterday, the nurse stated she is to go back in within the next day or 3 for antibodies. What are these antibodies they are talking about? She's had 3 full covid shots as per the recommendations. Is this a transfusion or iv fluid?

Thank you in advance for your time.

  • Hi,

Sorry to hear your wife has covid, I am just getting over it, I have had 2 FEC for breast cancer treatment, I wonder if it's what I had, because I am high risk the doctor suggested I go into hospital for a antibody drip, he said that is 85 percent effective as it spikes the Covid and stops it attacking out healthy Cells. I wonder if this is what they are talking about. I have found covid ok although I am over it it has caused me not to have my good days before my next chemo

I hope your wife is ok. Regards Sarah

  • Hi Sarah, that's exactly what it sounds like. Thank you for clearing that up. Very much appreciated.

She actually feels fine thus far other than runny nose and one or 2 coughs here and there. She got the paramedics sent out yesterday by the cancer hotline people, as her temp suddenly went over 38. Got taken to hospital for chest xray etc. The usual. But all bloods and scans fine. Then the pcr came back and boom. She was allowed out then as they knew what the temp was. No one expected covid at all.

Weird thing is, both her and my daughter (home schooling) have been shielding since christmas as covid is rife at the school. So I've been doing the shopping, chemist etc. Basically everything that involved going out next to people.

I had a wee bit of a tooth infection around 2 weeks ago so got put on antibiotics. During that treatment, I had a very slight sore head for 2 days. Like, barely noticeable and certainly no painkillers required. I thought it was just from the antibiotics as I had that years ago when i was on my last antibiotics and it's even stated on the side effects.

It could only have been me that had given her covid. So I'm now wondering if that headache was my brush with covid. I do normally get sore head, but one sided only as I grind my teeth. The headache i had during the antibiotics was both sides, so that was different. But again, it was a nothing headache. I didn't even think for a second to test myself.

Me and my daughter have both had pcr and lfd and we're negative. So I have no real way to know if i had covid. We're all fully vax'd and boosted.

  • Gosh that Temperature was high, glad she was okay,my boys unfortunately brought it home from school, both didn't have symptoms we do LFT every other day due too me being in and out of hospital for appointments, it was only because we did a LFt on Sunday night and they both were positive but with no Symptoms. On the Monday my Chest was tight so called the GP who said I needed too do a PCR which came back positive. The boys were absolutely fine. The Doctor sent me a little thing that went on my finger and it checked my Oxygen level etc, I put the data on an app.

It does sound like they want her to have the Antibody drip that I had, I took the advise from the Consultant and thought if it helped me not getting too poorly I would have it.

My husband tested positive a week after me and the boys again no symptoms.

I must admit I haven't been out what feels like weeks, as I was really worried about Covid, I'm weirdly relieved that I have had it now though.

    Best wishes Sarah

  • Hello and thank you for posting on Cancer Chat,

I am sorry to hear that your wife is receiving cancer treatment and that she now has Covid-19.  I think the treatment you are asking about is antibody treatment that is given to people that are at the highest risk of becoming very unwell with Covid-19. It is given to reduce any serious symptoms they might get.

Reading the information on the NHS website about what treatment is given and how it is given it looks like she could be offered IV treatment and this is usually given in an infusion over 1/2 hr.  Obviously  you will know more when you get to the hospital.  You can read more about this treatment and why it is given on the NHS website here

I hope your wife will be okay. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
