Radio therapy

My mother has recently undergone a week of radio therapy and she has a really heavy discharge.  Can anyone tell me if this is "normal" she has cervical cancer.

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about your mother going through cervical cancer treatment, this must be a difficult time for you both.

I am afraid that it is difficult for us to know if this discharge is normal because we cannot see it and we are not caring for her. My concern about this is that this could be a sign of infection. Therefore, if it is heavy (particularly if it is blood with clots), or if it smells and if it causes pain I would report any of these side effects to the team caring for your mother.

Because she has not long finished the radiotherapy I would get advice from the hospital where your Mother is being treated to be on the safe side. So you could contact the radiotherapy department and ask to speak with a nurse. They can hopefully reassure you or tell you that they need to check her out. If they cannot help they will also be able to advise you on what you should do, for example contact her GP.

I hope this has helped and that your mother will be okay.  Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline

  • Thank you so much for your response.  Mum has finished the radio therapy - it was five treaments in one week. However, I have contacted the GP to get help. Thanks again.
