Necrotic lymph node

I had an enlarged lymph node in my groin back in October that was so painful and big that they removed it and sent away for testing. I was originally told this was all clear. I have recently been I'll with severe fatigue. Bloods all fine but went in for examination with doctor and she found an enlarged lymph node in my underarm. She also told me that my first lymph node that was removed wasn't actually tested for cancer because it was so necrotic. I am now worried that it was bad and now I have another enlarged lymph node. I have been referred to get it biopsied but I'm just worried because the other one wasn't actually tested. I was told it could still be clear and my fatigue could be long Covid as I had Covid few months ago. I hate this waiting game, and currently off work so I'm just going to worry more!

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

A necrotic lymph node in most cases will not be caused by cancer. There are so many reasons why they happen , often it is because of an infection.

I realise you are worried, especially as you are going to have another biopsy but having this done still does not mean you necessarily have cancer.

Waiting to get investigations and tests done and then waiting again for the results can be a worrying time so I hope you are getting some support.

I hope you will be okay. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,
