LLETZ treatment

Hi there,

I'm wanting to post about my experience after the LLETZ procedure I had done just under a week ago and my experience. I also want to warn everyone in advance that this isn't for the faint hearted and in no way do I want to scare anyone as my experience is 1 in a million but I need some sort of support and advice.

So less than a week ago I went to my coloscopy appointment just to get checked as my smear came back high risk HPV and abnormal cells. There was no appointment to get a biopsy done whatsoever but while I was being checked they said they needed a biopsy due to what they could see it had spread into my birth canal. I had a bad feeling at this point due to the fact that a coloscopy in itself is terrifying but to get a biopsy done as well was a while new level of scary. But they said it's better getting it done then and there than having to travel over an hour to get a biopsy done. Well all went well until they hit a vein and struggled to stop it bleeding. This lasted a while to the point the freeze was wearing off and I could feel the heat inside me where they were trying to seal the opening to stop the bleeding. By the end of the appointment all was well and I was allowed to go home. I was in shock when I left as to how bad the experience was.

An hour after I had the procedure done I was on the train home when I started bleeding, to which I thought was just a heavy period but then it soaked through my pad and my jeans. An hour went by still a heavy period like bleed until I got home, absolutely mortified I had needed to walk in public soaked in blood. When I got home I put on comfy clothes and sat down when I experience a God almighty gush of blood, ran to the bathroom and I would not stop bleeding. I called 999 instantly. To summarise this all up, I waited at home for 3 and a half hours for an ambulance to come to take me to hospital as I had no other transport to take me as it's out of town. I had been left to bleed out for 8 hours before I even arrived at the hospital to then spend another 8 hours of them trying to stop the bleeding. By 4am my body went into shock, I had 2 blood transfusions and emergency surgery which should of been done hours before hand as for 10 hours I was bleeding out hundreds of clots the size of golf balls. I had a PV aneurysm which was caused by my LLETZ. I am absolutely traumatised after all of this and they have told me if my biospy comes back and it's not good then I need more treatment! Not a chance in hell! I have 4 kids my youngest being 5 months old and it nearly killed me. I'm not doing again but when I asked for a hysterectomy while at hospital they said no. I'm beyond scared and I really don't know what I can do or my options.

Please can some one help

  • Hello there and thanks for your post

I am so sorry to hear what you have been through the past week and I have to say what has happened to you is an extremely rare thing to happen to anyone after this type of procedure.

I can only imagine how going through this must have affected you and I do hope you are looking after yourself and have people  around you to support you practically and emotionally whilst you recover from this. Be kind to yourself this is still very early days and you need time to process what has happened before you need to think about what may or may not need to happen next.

When you are feeling stronger it may be worth talking things through with your own GP but if you need to speak to them sooner do ask for a telephone call.

Again once you are feeling up to it you may wish to contact the hospital Patient Advice Liaison Service (PALS) so the events you went through and the way your situation was managed can be looked into more closely.

Anyone who has gone through something traumatic like this may benefit from some form of counselling or talking therapy so do ask your GP or the hospital if you can be referred on if you are interested in this.

In regards to any future treatment to your cervix this if needed will be discussed with you in great detail. I am sure they will be aware of what you have been through already and will be willing to listen to your concerns about going through the same again to come to a joint decision about what the best way forward is.

Do give us a call if you would like to on 0808 800 4040, were here Monday-Friday 9-5 but there is also Jo's cervical cancer trust website here that you may also wish to contact for advice and support at this time.

    Wishing you a speedy recovery

    Take good care

    Naomi
