Confused

Hi. I had a letter from the hospital today confirming my diagnosis post bc surgery in December (yes, very late)

It states I'm estrogen negative but her2 positive.  I don't know what this means in terms of going forward with treatment.  Can someone please advise

Thank you x

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about your situation and I can appreciate you need more information.

The information from your surgery above means this:

Oestrogen is a hormone that causes some breast cancers to grow.  A oestrogen negative result means that no (or very little) oestrogen receptors where found on your cancer. This means that you do not need to take anti-oestrogen medication (hormonal therapy).

HER 2 is the name of a specific protein found on some breast cancer. It helps it to grow but not all breast cancers have this protein. Your cancer specialist breast doctors can give you treatment that targets the HER 2 which will help to treat your breast cancer  The treatment is called Herceptin (although there are other names for this) , you can read more about this treatment and how it is given on our website here

You will see that Herceptin is given as an intravenous infusion or as an injection under the skin. It can be given on its own or alongside chemotherapy. Your doctors will know how best to give it to you.Another charity called Breast Cancer Now has more information about what a pathology report for breast cancer means, you can see this here

I hope this has helped , please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline

  • Thank you for your reply. I'm still not clear on  what it means but I'm guessing the results of all of my tests go to the oncologist to determine the correct treatments.  I'm trying to take comfort from the fact that my ct scan was clear, whereas before I was focusing on the fact my cancer was a grade 3.

Thank you for your support,  Donna x
