Aching in sides after lymph node removal

This is a bit of a weird one, but bear with me! I had a lumpectomy this Thursday, and two lymph nodes removed as well. Since yesterday, I’ve had these pains in my back, ribs and sides, identical to when I was having chemo and having to inject myself with Pelgraz to stimulate my bone marrow to produce more white blood cells. I was wondering then if my lymph nodes have recognised that they were ‘under attack’ during the operation, so to speak, so are producing more white blood cells, and this is why my sides are hurting?? Has anyone else ever experienced this?

Hi I had a lumpectomy on right breast andall my lymph nodes removed from under my right arm as 3 had contained  cancer. .

I too experience pain on that side  still. Just as you mention. I' didn't have problem with my white blood cells  so u cant comment on that as to if it could contribute to your pain.

I did get seromas,a build up of fluid twice, which had to be drained. . I'm still experiencing pain and I'm told its quite normal and it can take years  to still feel the pain ,as your body goes through so much  with chemotherapy and radiotherapy  and now I'm on Letrazole for 10 years. But do speak to your breast care nurses  about things  thry can get you checked out by a consultant if they think it's necessary.  I was sent to consultant because of my pain, and I found a lump. Was checked over, and had a ultrasound  nothing sinister was found, just a small cyst, which I was tokd nothing to worry about. It was there that I was tokd its normal to be  experiencing   the pain I'm.having as it can take years for your breast tissue to heal as  yiu get scar tissue  after lumpectomy , chemotherapy, radiotherapy. Hope this helps tonease your mind, but as I said " do speak to someone, breast care nurses or your GP/ oncologist.

  • Ah ok, thank you for the reassurance  I suppose it is quite a trauma the body goes through, so it may hurt for some time. Yes, I'll see how the ache goes, and I have an appointment coming up; I can always tell them then if it hasn't gone away.

    Best wishes,

    Nicola.

  • Hello Stiltonite7 and thanks for posting,

This is an interesting observation as having an operation can trigger an inflammatory response and the number of white blood cells can rise for a few days, but I don't know if this is on the same scale as the effects of Pelgraz (it probably isn't) or if it is the cause of your pain. After surgery it can take a while for things to settle and nerves that have been disturbed or damaged can take a while to repair.

I hope you are doing ok  - if these pains don't go away or are getting worse do report them.

    Wishing you the best,

    Julia

  • Thanks for the advice, Julia  The ache has gone away quite a bit now, so hopefully things are settling down.

    Best wishes,

    Nicola.
