4 x BCC at age 35

Hi, I'm on my 4th BCC at age 35. My genetic test for Gorlins was negative although my consultant said I could have a mosaic version. I'm feeling down about what this means for the future developing more but then feeling guilty as it isn't a serious cancer and people are much worse off. I'm annoyed at myself for feeling worried about my appearance and further scars on my face. Has anyone else had experience of multiple BCC at a young (ish) age? Is there treatment or a care plan I can hope for rather than keep paying privately for full body checks?

  • Hello mrs_saddle and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to learn about what has been happening and can understand why you are feeling down.

I don't know if anyone else in a similar sort of situation will come along to post, if they do bear in mind that people's circumstance's aren't always the same so you sometimes need to be a bit cautious about what you take from another person's experience.

I think you need to talk things over with your GP, see what they suggest and ask if you can be referred to the local NHS dermatology service.  I don't know what the GP or the dermatology department will say about regular full body checks - they may not be able to offer them - but just on the principle of  'if you don't ask you don't get' , it is worth giving it a go.

It is very understandable to worry about needing to have further surgery in the future along with the possibility of scarring - our appearance is an important component of how we see ourselves so something like this can be troubling. Worry can creep up on anyone and become overwhelming, if this is happening I think you need to mention it to your GP.  For now try not to anticipate that you will definitely develop more BCCs that need treatment, because you might not, and dwelling on the possibility won't really help.

Any sort of cancer, even if it isn't an especially serious one, reminds us that good health can't be taken for granted and can make us feel more vulnerable and even a bit on edge or low in mood. Try not to be annoyed with yourself if you feel like this, it may be that there are emotions you need to process. I think having a genetics test because of the possibility of having an inherited condition is a stressful thing to go through so this could still be something that is affecting you.

If you want to talk anything over please do give us a call on Freephone 0808 800 4040, we are around weekdays 9-5.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
