Tamoxifen, exercise and hot flushes

Have been on tamoxifen for about 10 months. Stage 1 er+ lumpectomy and radiotherapy April to June 2021. Hot flushes were bad during summer into autumn then became manageable. Lack of sleep is a killer. Since January this year I have been doing more exercise but have noticed my flushes are a lot more frequent day and night. Has anyone else experienced this with exercising. I'm due my first yearly mammogram this month.

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I'm sorry you are experiencing hot flushes and you've noticed the frequency has increased since you started exercising.

As you know hormone treatments such as tamoxifen can cause menopausal symptoms ( hot flushes) and people vary in how much they are affected by them. You can read more about how this can be managed here. There is also information at this link on managing sleep problems.

You can also contact your breast care team for advice on your symptoms. You can leave a message for your breast care nurse and hopefully someone will get back to you. If needed, your GP can also prescribe you medication to help manage the hot flushes.

Hopefully other forum users will come along and share their experiences. If not, the organisation Breast Cancer Now has an online patient Forum where people come together and share their experience of going through similar things. You can join the Forum by clicking here.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • Thanks for all your advice and links. My flushes have just worsened since I have been exercising each day. I will be seeing nurses on 24th for my follow up so I will mention to them
