Biopsy of anal lump

Hi!

I am new to the group.

I just wondered if anyone has had a biopsy on an anal lump and if so were you awake?

When I've read about anal biopsies online it says that they only need local anaesthetic. But my consultant said it would be too painful and I need a general anaesthetic. So I am scheduled for the operation tomorrow. I'm so confused why I need a general when everything online says it can be fine with a local?

Has anybody had this? Is it painful afterwards? And if so for how long?

I got diagnosed with breast cancer a few months ago and have had two surgeries for that - and will be starting chemo very soon, so am just wanting to know how long recovery from the anal biopsy will be.

  • Hi Rainbowgirl22 and welcome to Cancer Chat.

I hope some of our members who have had this procedure will share their experiences with you soon but as you've posted in our nurses section of the forum I just wanted to let you know that they have finished working for the day and won't be back until tomorrow morning.

They will reply to you as soon as they can tomorrow but depending on what time your biopsy is, you're welcome to give them a call about this on 0808 800 4040 before you go. Their helpline will be open from 9a.m.

Wishing you all the best for tomorrow Rainbowgirl.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • Hi Rainbow girl, and thanks for posting.

I think you have your procedure today, so may already be at your appointment, but I'm afraid you would need to talk to your surgeon about the decision to give you a general anaesthetic. We are not part of your care so we aren't in the decision process, but its important you understand why so do ask them when you go today.

As for how long to recover from the surgery that is quite individual. Anyone who responds on here will be talking about their own experience which may differ from yours. Again talk to the team about this when you see them. There will be a degree of discomfort, particularly once it starts healing, but that would be expected of any area healing. Hopefully they will go through this with you when you leave the hospital and provide you with any painkillers needed.

Once healing takes place then it would usually be fine to start the chemo, do talk with your breast care nurse about this.

I'm sorry Rainbow, it probably wasn't the specific answer you wanted, but do take care and hope it all goes well for you today. If you feel you have anything further you want to talk through you may find it helpful to speak with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Sarah.
