Worried and confused

Hi I have just came back from  my gp from having discharge from.my right breast she said she can't feel any lumps but wants me to go for mammogram but not got mo lumps or anything else but just wondering if anybody knows why I'm 42 I have no other symptoms just breasts are very tenderx

  • Hi Patricia,

I was referred to Breats Clinic after seeing my GP with nipple discharge in November last year. There are various different reasons why someone might have discharge - some harmless and others that need extra investigation/treatment - and different types of discharge (different colour, consistentcy, coming from a single duct or more, one breast or both). They will likely do a mamogram and ultrasound to see if there is anything that warrants further investigation.

I am 43 and had some pain but no lumps or anything so quite similar to what you have described.

    Hope that helps!

Try not to stress although easier said than done - do you have a date for the breast clinic?

    Take care x

  • I haven't got any date she just said in the next 2 weeks she said it's not abnormal to have discharge I haven't had any other symptoms from breast is tender and it's only happend the once what was your outcome if u don't mind me asking.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation. It is never easy to be told that you need to have further investigations.

Doctors do have guidelines about when to send women to a breast clinic just to rule anything serious out. Most women referred to breast clinics are found not to have cancer but it is always a good idea to make sure.

Nipple discharge is not usually the result of something serious. Have a read about what the NHS have to say about nipple discharge here

The charity Breast Cancer Now have information about what to expect at a  breast clinic which you can see here

I hope you know more about your situation soon.

Do get back to us or give us a ring if you want to talk any of this through with one of the nurses on the helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the Best,

    Catherine

  • I was seen within two weeks so hopefully you should get an appointment soon. The fact that it has only happened once also sounds very positive.

I don't actually have an outcome yet - when I had my mammogram they found calcification (most likely unrelated to the dischrage) so have had biopsy for that and waiting for results.

With regards to the discharge, mine was frequent, and on-going so they may want to perform a small operation to remove some ducts to stop it form happening again. They think it is Papilloma (benign) so not so worried about this. I will find out at follow up next Friday.

I wish you all the best and hope you get your appointment soon to help ease the anxiety.

  • Hi got a phone call earlier to say they got an appointment next Friday

  • Yes next Friday at 12.30 what was your outcome if u don't mind me asking

  • That's good news. It's good to have a date so you know things are moving forward.

I spoke of my (lack of) outcome a few messages up in this thread.

My results are next Friday so important day for us both!! X
