Is it Esophageal Cancer?

Hi,

I am male, 43 years old and was diagnosed with GERD, IBS and Autoimmune Thyroiditis in 2018. Due to my severe reflux symptoms, bad breath and flatulence I have to undergo two invasive procedures Colonoscopy and Endoscopy in Year 2019 and both outcomes were normal without any action or advisory required. Due to my repeated GP visits for the reflux (without acid) symptoms affecting my daily routine I was advised to take Tab Omeprazole for a month which didn’t mitigate it then.

However my reflux (non-acidic without heartburn) has become severe recently and the LES doesn’t seem to settle either at sleep or not eating. For the last 4 weeks, I have started experiencing some new symptoms such as significant mucus followed by a cough immediately after consumption of food or water. When I spoke to my GP around the 11th Jan they suggested a blood test including a CBC and stools test for H. Pylori. The results revealed a negative Pylori, normal blood count but a slight increase of Thyroid (borderline). Again the GP suggested a PPI Tab Lansoprazole for 28 days and since taking it things got worse with an increase of oesophageal dismotility and the stools turned pale greenish. There is constant regurgitation of mucus and saliva throughout the day.

As a precaution, I have stopped taking anything hard to swallow and slowly switching to liquids, fruits and soups. Is it pre-malignancy in the throat or oesophagus? Please provide some advice if someone have experienced these symptoms and what tests to be done? I don’t want to delay before it turns out a serious situation. Every time I speak to a GP over the phone, they come up with a blood test or a comment “you have acid or silent reflux” followed by a prescription of PPI which doesn’t alleviate the symptoms. It is very difficult to see them in person for a thorough examination.

Any advice is much appreciated.

Thanks,

S.

  • Hello, and thank you for posting, and I'm sorry you have been having such a difficult time.

Your initial question, of whether this is a cancer or a pre malignancy in the throat or oesophagus, I am afraid we wouldn't know. It is only your doctor who may know if there is anything else the matter.

GERDS (or GORDS) does have a number of symptoms attached to it, I have given a link here that may be useful. But anyone who notices new or worsening symptoms does need to speak to their GP as they are the gateway to further tests or referrals if needed. You have said that previous tests and scans have come back negative but the medication recently prescribed has coincided with your symptoms worsening, so I think updating your doctor to this would be a good idea.

Other users of the forum may come forward with their own experiences, but this situation is individual to you. I think contacting your surgery again is the best thing to do, and if necessary they will bring you in for a face to face examination. Do also let them know your concerns about oesophageal cancer, this will help them understand better how you are feeling.

Take care, and I hope this gets sorted out for you soon.

    Sarah.
