Endometrium 9mm

Hello, I saw a Consultant at my local hospital last Monday 24th January for post menopausal bleeding I'm 54 years old. Had a letter this afternoon telling me my endometrium is 9mm and they will write in due course with biopsy results. I had a Mirena insertion whilst I was there and since I had it put in I haven't stopped bleeding. The person who did the Hysteroscopy said she couldn't see anything alarming but I am concerned about the 9mm thickening. Do you think I should be concerned ?

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I’m sorry you’re worried about some recent menopausal bleeding. The NHS have written some information about the possible causes of post menopausal bleeding and you can read more about this by clicking here.  They advise patients to see a specialist so I’m pleased that you have been referred to the hospital and have had some tests, and you are now waiting for the results of your hysteroscopy.

Some women may have a condition called endometrial hyperplasia.  This is when the cells in the womb lining build up and the lining becomes thickened. Endometrial hyperplasia is a benign (non cancerous) condition, but if left untreated, it may slightly increase the risk of developing womb cancer.  But this increase in risk is generally quite low and most women with endometrial hyperplasia will not develop womb cancer. One of the treatments for a thickened womb lining is the mirena coil. This device releases progesterone to thin the lining of the womb. You can read more about this condition on the 'Patient' website and how it may be treated at this link.

I know waiting when to find out more is stressful but hopefully you will know more about your situation soon. Give us a ring if you want to talk things through. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
