No clear margins

CIN3 told I may need a hysterectomy I'm only 28 why would they recommend this?

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am so sorry to hear about your situation and I can understand that this must have come as such a shock to be told that you need a hysterectomy.

I am not exactly sure what has happened in your situation but if you have  had several lletz procedures in the past and the cells have come back, they may feel that it is in your best interests to have a hysterectomy to prevent your abnormal cells from turning in to cancer.

Do talk to the colposcopist or gynaecologist involved in your care and get them to explain why a hysterectomy is in your best interests.  They are in the best position to explain why they feel that you need a hysterectomy and there is not another option that they could consider.

If they decide to do a hysterectomy it is not a decision that they will take lightly.  The charity Jo's trust has some useful information about this which you can see here

I can understand that the next few weeks will be tough and I hope that you have a trusted member of your family or good friend who is helping you through this at this very difficult time.

You are more then welcome to give one of the nurses a ring on the helpline to go through any of this if you would like. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the Best,

    Catherine

  • Thank you so very much for your reply I have only had lletz done once and was contacted 6 weeks later to say there was no clear margins. The hysterectomy was suggested before I had any lletz done. I keep getting this bad feeling I'm not being told something its terrifying

  • Hello and thanks for getting back to us again,

You may find it helpful to chat this through with your GP to see if you can find out more.

I can understand that it is difficult for you to understand why a procedure is being done if you don't feel that you have enough information. I don't know whether you have an appointment to see the gynaecologist to talk all of this through. I am sure in order to gain your consent for why they need to do the hysterectomy they will need to talk all of this through with you anyway.

If you have an appointment with your gynaecologist it may be helpful to take a close friend or a member of your family in so you have got two people listening to what the doctor has to say as so often so much information is given that it is difficult to remember everything that is said.

I am sure that it is not a decision that they have come to lightly. The other option is to consider getting a second opinion to see what they say. We do have some information on our website about how you go about getting a second opinion here

I hope this helps but do ring the nurses for a chat if you want to discuss any of this.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take Care,

    Catherine
