Why would a CT scan be ordered after a polpectomy?

Hi, I hope someone knowledgeable can shed any light on this.

My husband had a colonoscopy/gastrocopy  a few weeks ago, which revealed quite a few poplyps in his colon. A few small ones were removed, but some had to be left for another procedure to remove them via EMR. One was very large, 36mm. Biopsies were taken from and all came back normal.

He had the polpectomy last week to remove the large polyp. It seems like it was very unpleasant for him, and it took about 90 minutes. I'm not sure if they managed to remove all of it, and they had to leave a couple of smaller ones, as he couldn't manage any more of the procedure. He felt terrible for about 3 days afterwards.

He's now had a letter saying that a CT scan has been ordered for next week, on his abdomen and thorax region. Why would this be? I'm really worried and have told him to ring and try to find out more, but he doesn't seem to want to.

Sorry this post is so long.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about the situation you find yourselves in and imagine this must be a worry.

I'm afraid no one here can say for sure why the doctors want a CT scan and it really would be best if you husband called the hospital to find out for certain.

If as you say they weren't able to remove the whole polyp then they may want to carry out a CT to check the bowel and then discuss the options for further treatment such as surgery, but without being involved in your husband's care this is just guess work.

36mm is classed as a large polyp so sometimes they do a scan just to be extra thorough and make sure they haven't overlooked anything.

I hope you both know more soon and do encourage you husband to call the hospital.

Wishing you both all the best and that everything will be okay.

  • Hi Naomi,

    Thanks so much for replying.

Thanks for your thoughts on this. Like you say, it's very hard to guess, and he really needs to call the hospital to find out more information before the appointment. I really appreciate your help.
